Early Morning Blaze

At approximately 02:30 hrs on Friday May 11, 2007 the Oyster Bay Fire Companies were alerted for an Automatic Alarm at 39 Sherwood Gate. Upon the arrival of Atlantic Steamer Chief Frank Ozol a heavy smoke condition was present inside the residence and heavy fire was visible from the rear of the structure. Chief Ozol advised Nassau County Fire Communications of this situation and requested a Signal 10 (working fire) be transmitted. Oyster Bay Engine 558 was First Due and utilized the fire hydrant at the entrance to the driveway. The crew of 558 stretched a 2 inch handline through the front door of the residence and mounted an aggressive interior attack on the fire. Atlantic Steamer Ladder 551 was second due and their crew assisted the crew of 558 by stretching a second attack line to back up the first. Heavy Fire was present in the rear of the home and rapidly spread despite the aggressive efforts from the crews of 558 and 551. Chief Ozol requested mutual aid from East Norwich,Locust Valley, Syosset, Glen Cove, and Bayville Fire Companies. Operations went from interior to exterior due to the rapid spread of fire to the second floor of the residence. The main body of fire was knocked down from the outside and crews then reentered the residence and began the overhaul process exposing hidden pockets of fire and extinguishing them, Crews operated at the scene for about 4 hours. No injuries were reported. The scene was turned over to Nassau County Fire Marshals and the cause is under investigation.
