Historic Oyster Bay Building Ravaged by Fire

On Monday Jan 24, 2005 at 00:20hrs the Oyster Bay Fire Department and Atlantic Steamer Fire Company were alerted for a reported building fire at the intersection of East Main Street and South Street (Nobmans Hardware). This was confirmed as a working fire. OBFD Chiefs DeCarolis and Mantegari III were on scene directing the actions of members from Engine 558, Tower Ladder 554, Ambulances 5516 and 5526, and Utility Vehicle 5510. An aggressive interior attack was initiated however this operation was hindered by a partial first floor collapse into the basement. Members were directed to back out and a master stream operation went into effect. 4 Ladder Pipes from Oyster Bay FD, Atlantic Steamer FD, Syosset FD and East Norwich FD went into operation. Hose lines were advanced to the roof of the deli next to the hardware store and were used to keep flames from spreading. Numerous hand lines were also stretched and used from the ground. There was one firefighter who suffered minor injuries after a slip and fall due to the icy conditions caused by the single digit temperatures. Members were on-scene for about four and a half hours. Mutual Aid was received from East Norwich (Engine, Tower Ladder, Heavy Rescue), Bayville (Engine), Syosset (Tower Ladder), Sea Cliff (Engine), Locust Valley (Engine), Roslyn Rescue (Engine), Glenwood (Engine), Glen Cove, Cold Spring Harbor (Engine), Huntington Manor (Tower Ladder), Hicksville (Mask Service Unit). The Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
