The Oyster Bay Fire Companies were alerted for a phone alarm reporting a fire at 58 Sandy Hill Road in the Oyster Bay Cove section of Oyster Bay at approx. 8:20pm on Tuesday, January 22, 2008.
Upon the Chiefs responding, a second call came in reporting the address 58A Sandy Hill Road. The first Chief to arrive was Atlantic Steamer Fire Company Chief Robert Bagan. He was met by frantic homeowners advising him that the 2nd floor of the house was on fire. There was also a heavy smoke condition visible on the outside.
OBFD Chief Frank Mantegari III made his way to the 2nd floor via the interior stairs with 2nd assistant Chief of ASFC Douglas Schadler. The fire was in the front bedroom but at that point, burned through the bedroom door and spread into the adjoining bedroom and hallway.
Atlantic Steamer Ladder 551 was the 1st unit to arrive, they stretched a line to the second floor and while Engine 552 secured a hydrant and fed water into Ladder 551.
The fire was contained to the 2nd floor and roof of the house, although there was moderate water damage to the 1st floor. The fire was brought under control in approximately one hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshals unit.
